How to Avoid a Pedestrian Accident

Pedestrian accidents are a growing problem in the United States, with an average of over 7,000 people killed or injured each year. These deaths and injuries are preventable, yet they continue to occur due to careless drivers and distracted walkers.

While most of these accidents occur at night or with low visibility, even well-lit areas can be dangerous for pedestrians who may not be paying attention as they cross streets. The consequences of pedestrian accidents can range from minor scrapes and bruises to life-altering disabilities or death, as in this instance.

No one should have to suffer such devastating results from simply crossing the street. It’s essential that both pedestrians and drivers alike remain aware of their surroundings at all times in order to avoid tragedy.

Avoiding a pedestrian accident could save your life. Here are some of the best ways to keep yourself and others safe on the streets:

  • Always use crosswalks when available and obey traffic laws.
  • Make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street to ensure they see you.
  • Wear light-colored clothing at night or in low-visibility areas.
  • Avoid using cellular devices while walking, as it can be distracting.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and watch for vehicles approaching intersections before crossing.
  • Try to make yourself visible by carrying a flashlight or reflector in dark conditions.
  • Never assume that cars will stop for pedestrians, even if you are in a marked crosswalk or have the right of way.
  • Avoid jaywalking and be sure to look both ways before stepping off the sidewalk into traffic lanes (even if there is no car present).
