Black Ice Re-Freeze Causes Hundreds of Car Accidents in Dallas

The Dallas Police Department reported that the worst day for car accidents during the February 2023 ice event was Friday, February 3, 2023.

The department had over 160 calls about car accidents between midnight and 8 a.m. Black ice caused many of those accidents. This type of ice is a thin glazing of ice that occurs on streets, especially overpasses and bridges.

Police officials say that the number of crashes was higher than during any other day of the storm because traffic was heavier as schools and businesses reopened. Shortly before midnight on Thursday, the Fort Worth Police Department reported that two people had been killed in an accident, while Garland city officials say that one person was killed in a car accident early Friday morning. The Arlington Police Department also reported that a driver was killed on Friday morning.

The good news is that the storm should be over if you avoided black ice accidents on Friday. Icicles were quickly melting and pelting some pedestrians and vehicles as they fell. The winter storm should be over, with temperatures returning to the low 50s over the weekend before hitting the low 60s early next week.

Winter Storm Accidents Can Be Costly

Being involved in a black ice accident can be very costly. People lucky enough to walk away from accidents may still face large vehicle repair bills. Others are now looking at medical bills after being injured in accidents.

These car and truck accidents may have even caused life-long injuries requiring costly medical care and supplies. Unfortunately, some people now have to plan funerals for their loved ones, which can also be an expense that weighs on a family emotionally and financially for years to come.
